Tony’s Scariest Moment ~ The drill bit
Incident!
It was a frisk October day in Bow , NH. It was a normal day in BMS. Halls were empty. Kids were ready to fall asleep in class. Fifth grade was in specials before recess. The tech ed room was full of joy and excitement. Tony Dal Pos was making his second pencil holder. But what happened next would be a moment Tony wouldn’t forget.
Tony Dal Pos is a normal 10-year-old boy. He goes to school, has a lot of friends and likes to craft things. It was special time in the fifth grade, Tony was in tech ed. He was using a drill press, a tool Tony had used many times before. As Tony pulled out the step on stool and got up on it, a strange feeling erupted in the pit of his stomach. He shrugged it off, placed the pencil holder on the press and started to drill. He was on the third hole and half way through the wood when it happened. As he was drilling, the drill bit got caught in a knot in the wood. He couldn’t pull the wood out of the drill. When he went to turn it off the wood hit his hand, stunning him. In a split second later the drill bit broke and flew straight into his face! An ear slitting scream erupted in the workshop. Tony fell to the floor, blood was dripping onto the cold cement floor in the workshop.
Mr. Mayo scurried over to Tony saying, “Tony are you okay!?” He lifted up by his arm pits and helped him to the nurse. At the nurse, as soon as they walked in the door Mrs. Ireland asked Mr. Mayo “What happened! Why is his face covered in blood!?” right after she asked, Tony was coughing up blood! She helped Tony to a bed, gave him four ice packs and went to talk to Mr. Mayo in the hall. When she came back, she asked Tony in a serious voice, “Tony what happened!?” Realizing after the question that he couldn’t talk, Mrs. Ireland went to fetch a small bowl for Tony to cough all the blood in his up and out. Tony coughed his blood up like a cat having a hair ball. Mr. Mayo went to the shop to retrieve the drill bit and wood from the shop. Tony’s mom was called to pick him up in the nurses’ office. A week later, Tony went back to the shop, used the same drill press and same size drill bit like nothing ever happened.
