9/29/09 Per. 1 Skateboard Camp

During the summer of 09, I went to a 50,000 square foot skateboard camp/skatepark in Rye, NH called Rye Airfield. The camp is five days long. The first day when we got there we introduce our selves and got to know the director Nels and the instructors I was nervous waiting on what was going to happen. We skateboarded a lot with the instructors and I got a 1 on 1 lesson, they seemed very loquacious. I learned a lot of cool tricks such as jump stairs doing gaps and grind, which is sliding along a rail.

I met a kid named Dom short for Dominick. He was a good skateboarder. “Did you know there is a contest at the end of the camp” Dom said. I was excited to know that next we skated with each other trying to be better than the other. We play a lot of games such as follow the leader which is where you follow the person in front of you and do the same trick as the person then we skated a lot of the skatepark trying to find out what tricks to do for the contest. We started to learn tricks out of the pool, which is a drained pool. You would get speed and roll into the bowl and get air of the other side. That was fun so I chose to do three tricks out of the pool.

On the last day of camp we had a couple hours of free skate I practiced for the contest, I figured I could land the trick about 80% of the time so I was happy. After lunch they had the contest I watched as people much older than me did really cool tricks. There was one person who I was worried about because he was very talented. When I saw him land all three of his tricks I got worried, and I heard everyone cheer. I thought that right when he landed he was going to win.

I was the last person to go so when it was my turn I look at the ramp and rolled down and came out doing a backside 180 grab, which is when you grab your board and turn 180 and degrees to the left. I landed and I heard cheering. I rolled around the outside of the pool and my friend Dom high fived me. As I rolled in again I got as much speed as I could and cam out doing a indy fingerflip, which is when you grab the front of your board and flip it side ways with your fingers. “Land the third trick!” Dom said. Then I decided to take it easy and just air. I got excited when I landed all my tricks and everybody cheered.

When it came time to vote I voted for my friend Justin and Henry, I asked if I could vote for my self and Nels said” yea but I don’t think you need to.” That was my first clue that I might win. At the end of the day it came time to give out the prizes and announce the winners. They gave prizes to all the campers. Then they announced the third place winner which was Justin and gave him a t shirt. Then the second which was Jon they gave him a t shirt too. “and the first place winner is goes to Cameron Gauthier!” I jumped up they gave me a t shirt and a skateboard deck which is a skateboard with no wheels. As we celebrated they took our pictures and then it was about time to go
